One of the biggest barriers to claiming a refund is simply not knowing if you qualify. The good news is that you don't need to be a financial expert to figure it out.

The 3-Step Checklist

  1. Did you buy a car on finance?

This applies to Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) or Hire Purchase (HP) agreements. Personal loans from a bank usually don't count, as the dealer didn't arrange them.

  1. Was it before January 28, 2021?

The ban on Discretionary Commission Arrangements came into force on this date. Agreements signed afterwards should be clean, but those before are prime candidates.

  1. Was there a dealer involved?

If a car dealer or broker arranged the finance for you (rather than you going directly to a lender), there was likely a commission involved.

The "Interest Rate" Test

Did the dealer tell you the interest rate was fixed, or did they say they could "find you a deal"? If they had the power to adjust the rate, they likely had a DCA.

Next Steps

If you answered "Yes" to the questions above, you likely have a claim. You don't need to dig out every single piece of paperwork right now. Our tool helps you request the necessary information from your lender as part of the complaint process.
