The waiting game can be frustrating. Knowing what happens behind the scenes can help lower your stress levels.

Week 1-2: Acknowledgement

You should receive an automated or manual email confirming they have received your complaint. They will give you a reference number. Keep this safe.

Week 4-8: Investigation

The lender's complaints team will review your file. They will check:

  • The date of the agreement.
  • The commission model used.
  • The difference between the rate you paid and the base rate.

The 8-Week Deadline

By law, financial institutions have 8 weeks to provide a "Final Response Letter" or explain why they need more time.

Note: Due to the high volume of DCA claims, the FCA has extended some deadlines, but lenders must still keep you informed.

The Outcome

  1. Upheld: They agree they owe you money and offer a settlement.
  2. Rejected: They claim no DCA was used or that it was fair.
  3. Hold: They are waiting for further FCA guidance (common in late 2025).

If rejected, don't panic. This is where the Ombudsman comes in.
